How To Build A Hot Tub
July 2nd, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedA small hot tub or home spa is not that expensive, however, those who want to save money or who are handy with carpentry, could consider building their own hot tub. If you have some woodworking or shop skills, it isn’t that difficult to discover how to build a hot tub.
Obviously size is a consideration. If you have a large family it makes no sense to build a hot tub that can be enjoyed by only one person at a time. No one wants to take a number when they’re ready to hop into the spa. You also need to spend time consider where in your home or garden you’re going to locate your hot tub. If you set it on the lawn, remember that the grass underneath is certainly going to die!
If you have a timber deck or a terrace adjacent to the house it can be the ideal location for the spa. The hot tub can also be incorporated into a home renovation.
When planning on how to build a hot tub, remember that you need a way to heat the water and to keep it hot. A spa is not like a regular bathtub where the water comes in already heated. There are several models of hot tub heating kits that you can buy or, if you’re very experienced you may be able to install a heating coil to go under or around the hot tub itself. However, if you do decide to use a this type of heating system for your hot tub, you need to exercise caution and be sure that you know what you’re doing. Water and electricity don’t mix!
Of course the material you use for the tub must be waterproof, so many people use a small pool or other type of deep plastic dish and surround it with cedar or another water-resistant timber. When you build a hot tub remember to keep the electric water heater well clear of the plastic pool!
If you follow these basic ideas it isn’t that difficult to draw up plans to build a hot tub on your own. And if it’s just for yourself, it’s even easier! And for those who aren’t as confident, you can always find do-it-yourself kits and discover how to build a hot tub with a prefabricated kit at a home improvement store.

How to Choose a Pest Control Company
May 21st, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedGranted, there are some minor pest problems we can handle on our own. Go to the hardware store, buy a spray or powder, apply it, and the problem is over. However, large pest problems or pest problems in large areas will probably call for the aid of a pest control firm. Many are probably advertised in your area. How do you know which one is best for you?
Is the company local? If you hire a pest control firm that is some distance away, they will probably charge extra for transportation. Of course, knowing a reliable company in Arizona will not help you if you need Wisconsin rat control. It is understandable that they must cover their costs but this makes the cost that much larger. Only chose someone from a distance if they also comply with all the other points below.
The more important question is, are they honest? A family moved from the north to the south in the US and quickly learned that termites were a serious problem to wood structures. In fact a house could not be sold without a termite inspection. This pattern quickly emerged: when you call for an inspection, they will find evidence of termites. If you sign a one year contract with them and ask them to return within that time period, they will not find evidence of termites. Were they really honest? Who knows!
Being honest applies both to their inspection and their service. If they guarantee the problem will be fixed, will they return until it is? If they promise a certain number of treatments a year, will they keep that promise? Their reputation with their clients says a lot about how trustworthy they are.
How prompt is the pest control company’s service? If you have a problem, you want it dealt with as soon as possible. Will they be able to handle your problem in a reasonable time and will they show up when they say they will? However, if a company is very busy, it might be because they are so reliable! So keep this in mind when considering whom to hire.
Fourth, can the pest control company handle your particular problem? Some companies might say they can handle anything but really have no experience in getting rid of the particular pest you are having trouble with, such as bat control. Ask them specifically about their experience the pest that is bothering you.
Fifth, some are concerned about the many chemicals that could poison other animals, a source of water, or damage the environment. Are they are aware of any residual problems from the chemicals they use? How do they deal with this?
It could be a significant investment when you call a pest control company. You will want to get your money’s worth of reliable service. These pointers should help in choosing a pest control company that will help you get rid of mice and not leave you disappointed.

Easy Attic Insulation Suggestions
May 16th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedThere are many options available when it comes to buying insulation. There are many things that need to be considered when figuring out which type of attic insulation will suit you best. The unique aspects of your home and the preference of the installer are two important factors.
The first thing to do when buying attic insulation is figuring out what your needed R value is. Often insulation with a high R value will be thick and heavy. Your R value will also be determined by the climate in your local area. Various types of insulation will give you different R value. You will need to decide which type of insulation will have the R value you need. Once you know the correct R value for your circumstances then you can look at the type of insulation that will work best.
Some of the main types of attic insulation available include blankets, loose-fill spray, rigid, and reflective. Each of these materials has some advantages and the R values will vary. One of the most popular types of attic insulation is loose fill. Loose fill spary comes in several types including cellulose, polyurethane foam, rock wool, and fiberglass. It works great for those areas in the attic that are hard to reach. Most often this type of insulation is sprayed in with a blower. Special equipment is needed to put loose fill attic insulation in your attic.
Homeowners who want to do the job themselves may want to think about using another type of insulation such as blanket or reflective. You can purchase blanket insulation in rolls that are made from either fiberglass or rock wool. Pieces from the roll can be cut to fit into your attic spaces. It is possible to buy blanket insulation either with or without a special vapor retardant. Rigid insulation can be made from several different types of foam. Even with its light weight it can provide great thermal and acoustical insulation. Reflective insulation is a foil lined surface that is designed to reduce downward heat flow.

Is Wind Powered Electricity A Good Alternative?
May 15th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedA good alternative energy solution seems to be wind powered electricity or should we focus completely on solar powered electricity? With multiple crises on our hands (financial, environmental and a fuel shortage) people all over the world are looking for alternatives. And although a lot of the people with actual power are not yet convinced that this is the best time to go green, the common people understand it and they are searching for energy alternatives. But what alternatives are the best, solar or wind powered electricity?
Reasons to start looking for alternatives:
- Lower or eliminate power bills
- Be self sufficient
- Get of the grid
- Better world for our children
- Better for our health in general
- Fossil fuels like oil should be used as material to create for example plastic and not for energy usage.
Wind powered electricity is not a new alternative
The power of wind has been used for centuries, in earlier days windmills where usually used to grind grain but also as lumber mill and for other purposes. Modern windmills are primarily used for wind generated electricity, even in Holland a country that is known for its windmills time has progressed.
There are two types of wind powered electricity, the first is produced by the power companies in large windmill parks and the second are residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7. Wind is in both cases an ideal alternative, the amount of energy produced by the spinner blades is enormous. The wind powered electricity process requires less resources than solar power panels and they are simple to install.
Wind powered electricity is very good for the planet
This non polluting renewable energy source is an excellent alternative for fossil fuels and there is no reason why this should not be one of the biggest alternatives we can use. The only problem with wind powered electricity is that it is hard to store. You just can’t put it in a jar and open it when you need it. However there are already batteries that are good enough and they will improve rapidly the coming few years, they will be better and cheaper quickly. Because of this it will be much easier to store this kind of renewable energy.
Wind powered electricity can be used all over the planet
Another great advantage of wind powered electricity over solar electricity is that it is available in all corners of the world. And every country is able to supply to there people. This type of wind powered electricity on a large scale also creates jobs in countries because they need to be produced, placed and maintained.
Grid Tied Or Get Off The Grid
If you are able to use your own residential wind turbine you have a great advantage, it will reduce or eliminate your power bills and you actually do something to create a better healthier world. Wind powered electricity is at least as good as solar power and it depends on the location and personal circumstances what kind of system you choose. There are excellent residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7 and that are not difficult to install and that are a perfect solution for many homes that are not urban located.
The best thing you can do if you are interested in a residential wind turbine system is to inform yourself about your options. At her website UnlikeNormalEnergy.com, Cathy Patterson, will provide you with all kinds of helpful information about alternative sources of energy like, for example, the Skystream 3.7 wind turbine or Solar Security Light .

May 15th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedI was watching CNBC today and the price of oil was going up again. They are predicting it to go up to $60 and $70 a barrel pretty soon. And just in time for summer. Time for outrageous $500 electricity bills that we can barely afford. This is why investing now in homemade wind generators makes more sense than ever. You can get started building your own wind generator for under $100. Learn more in this short post.
Wind generator costs have dropped over the years, what used to cost thousands you can now do for a few hundred. Almost everything you need is at your local hardware store. Most recognize the need for cleaner energy sources so they have started stocking wind generator storage batteries and the wind turbine blades. And if you live in an area without easy access to a hardware store, you can buy the parts cheaply online.
Building homemade wind generators does not take long. There are readily available plans that show you step-by-step how to make your own generator. The whole process will take you less than two weekends. Once you have enough wind power generators, you can power your home for free. You will no longer be under the control of the major oil businesses and their high energy prices. You could even generate enough power to sell some back to them. That could put some much needed money back in your pocket each month.
You can cut your electric bills in half and then work your way towards living off the power grid completely when you add in some solar power generators as well. These days it pays to cut costs as much as possible. The benefits of clean home made wind turbines are numerous.
